Prof. Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger, Director, Center for International Sustainable Law (CISDL); Senior Director, Sustainable Prosperity

Professor Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger is Senior Legal Expert for IDLO, an intergovernmental organization headquartered in Rome, Italy. She assists the UN and countries in the Americas, Africa and Asia to implement sustainable development treaties on trade, investment, biodiversity and climate change, leading law and justice capacity development for high court judges, governments and civil society, and earning sixteen national commendations for her law, justice and development work. In a pro bono academic capacity, she also serves as Senior Director of the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) in Montreal, as Affiliated Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at Cambridge University, and as Visiting Professor for the University of Chile Faculty of Law in Santiago. She has authored and edited eighteen books in four languages published by Oxford University Press, Kluwer Law International, Cambridge University Press and others, and lectures at Oxford, Cambridge, McGill, Victoria and Chile law faculties. She also serves on the Board of the International Law Association, chairs the UNCSD Partnership in International Sustainable Development Law, co-leads the World Bank Law Justice and Development Forum’s TWG on Environment and Natural Resources Law, and has founded nine grassroots, national and international organizations for the environment, human rights and development. She holds a DPhil (Oxon), MEM (Yale), BCL and LLB (McGill) and BA Hons.
