H.H Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al-Nahyan inaugurated the World Future Council 6th Annual General Meeting in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, 23 November 2012- H.H Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al-Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, has inaugurated the World Future Council’s 6th Annual General Meeting. The four-day meeting is taking place at Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, organized by Nahtam Social Responsibility and Abdul Majeed Al Fahim.

The opening ceremony was attended by renowned international personalities such as the Founder of the World Future Council and the Right Livelihood Award, Jakob von Uexkull, and World Future Councillors Dr. Olivier Giscard d’Estaing, Chairman of the European League for Economic Co-operation France, Prof. Dr. Rafia Ghubash, Professor of Psychiatry, former President, Arabian Gulf University, Judge Christopher Weeramantry, former Vice President of the International Court of Justice from Sri Lanka, Julia Marton-Lefévre, Director General of the IUCN, Alexander Likhotal, President of Green Cross International and Sir James Mancham, former President of Seychelles. Nahtam Social Responsibility was represented by Ebrahim Al Haddar, Chairman and Co-Founder, Nahtam Youth Wing Leader, Maha Al Fahim, Nahtam Vice President and Co-Founder, Isabelle LeBon-Poonoosamy, and CEO, George V. Itty.

“Like the rest of the world, the United Arab Emirates are looking for new ways of living and producing in order to minimize their ecological footprint and avoid climate chaos. The World Future Council works to support this process by identifying and helping to spread “best” solutions. We are hoping to establish a permanent presence in the Gulf region and we are very grateful to Nahtam Social Responsibility Abu Dhabi for organizing our 6th Annual General Meeting where we will further develop the World Future Council’s strategy”, said Mr. Jakob von Uexkull, Founder of the World Future Council and the Right Livelihood Award.

The World Future Council was founded in 2007 and is comprised of up to 50 eminent members from all five continents. As the “voice of future generations” the organization brings the interests of generations to come to the center of national and international decision-making. It addresses challenges to our common future and provides decision makers with effective, future-proof solutions. Its current working areas include Climate and Energy, Regenerative Cities, Sustainable Economies, Healthy Ecosystems, Just Societies and Peace and Disarmament.

Mr. Abdul Majeed Al Fahim, Chairman of Dubai Pearl, supported the event and said: “Nahtam Social Responsibility displays the real care to safeguard the future by organizing the World Future Council Annual General Meeting in Abu Dhabi. It is a message for all the people living in the UAE to cooperate with each other to reduce carbon footprint and communicate the same among generations to come.”

The World Future Council is a charitable foundation. Its head office is located in Hamburg, Germany, with additional staff working from London, Brussels, Johannesburg, Los Angeles and soon New Delhi. It recently conducted an expert hearing on regenerative urban planning in Dubai hosted by the Al Habtoor Group and published a report titled “A Future for Gulf Cities” that is available in English or Arabic at http://www.worldfuturecouncil.org/publications.html.
