„Mama Peking“ Gertrude Mongella becomes new WFC Honorary Councillor

International Foundation gains support of the former Secretary General of the UN World Conference on Women and first President of the Pan-African Parliament

Hamburg, 17 December 2010. The World Future Council Foundation welcomes the African politician Dr. Gertrude Mongella as new Honorary Councillor. With the slogan “Women’s rights are human rights” she led the difficult Beijing World Conference on Women to success and engaged subsequently as first President of the Pan-African Parliament for the political unification of Africa. Dr. Gertrude Mongella is a internationally respected diplomat, who established her reputation from 1982 to 1990 as Tanzanian Minister of Women Affairs and Tourism. Now the prominent activist has agreed to become Honorary Councillor of the World Future Council (WFC). The WFC considers itself as a Voice of future generations and champions future-oriented policy approaches as well as their spread and implementation.

WFC founder Jakob von Uexküll said: ”Dr. Gertrude Mongella is a truly outstanding African representative. With her experience, contacts and her enthusiasm she will make it possible for us to intensify our work for the rights of future generations.”

In addition, at the WFC Annual General Meeting at the beginning of November in Hamburg five new Council Members from four continents were elected. The Council is now strengthened by international personalities such as Prof. Dr. Alexander Likhotal, advisor to Mikhail Gorbachev and President of Green Cross International, Dipal Chandra Barua, Co-founder of the Grameen Bank, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, Dr. Sándor Fülöp, Parliamentary Commissioner for Future Generations in Hungary, Alyn Ware, advisor for nuclear disarmament to the UN and to the government of New Zealand, as well as Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, National Chief to the Assembly of First Nations, which unites 644 Canadian indigenous peoples groups.
